Maximal 3 is the third version of developer Venomode’s true-peak brickwall limiter, soft clipper, and loudness metering plug-in. It’s available now for Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu (Linux) users at an introductory discount and the upgrade from version 2 is free!
Maximal 3 is a loudness maximizer with a broad range of uses. Its main purpose is to increase the overall loudness of your tracks or masters without audio quality degradation. To that, the plug-in features a true-peak brickwall limiter and a variable-shape soft clipper.
The limiter section benefits from true-peak lookahead detection which prevents inter-sample peaks from clipping. With four limiting modes and controls for attack and release, Maximal 3 is capable of character and transparent limiting, bus ‘glue’ compression, and ‘pumping’ effects. Likewise, the clipping section with adjustable curve (soft to hard) can tame peaks, soften transients, and add overdrive.
The loudness metering section displaying LUFS and true-peak values based on the ITU-R BS.1770-4 specification. Furthermore, you can set the target loudness of the meters to any level or standard, such as EBU R128.
Finally, the plug-in supports up to 16x oversampling using linear-phase resampling filters. The output signal is upsampled, limiting is applied, and the sample rate is downsampled back to the original. That’s about the smartest way to achieve this.
All in all, I really like what I’m seeing here. It’s a professional plug-in at an affordable price. Probably not the kind used in the sterling-est of mastering and production facilities, but certainly capable enough in the hands of a pro!
Through the introductory period, Maximal 3 is on sale for EUR 40, down from EUR 58. The upgrade from version 2 is free. The plug-in is available in 64-bit VST, AU, and AAX formats for Windows 8.1+, macOS 10.9+, and Ubuntu 18.04+.
